An achievement! I read 红楼梦 （上） in about a day. I usually take a few days to read this kind of thing.. But then there's (下) next. =/
Allow me to use my excellent chinese translation skills to give a quick run-through of the book!
Intro: There was a man. He had a son. This son grew up, and had TWO sons. However, one son died early, and the other one grew up. This son had one son, and one daughter. The daughter died. The son also died, but before that, he had another two sons.
Uhh... other scenes.
The other scenes mostly consist of:
-Woman commits suicide by jumping into well/hanging herself/slashing her own neck/swallowing money/hanging herself/hanging herself.
-A woman gets super pissed at a man because of something he said. He says something else, and she becomes happy.
-A huge group of people engage in poetry competitions involving wine, and occasionally roasted lamb and sudden violence.
